Partner - commercial. Mark co-founded Alfagates in 2004 having previously worked on the Iraq Currency Exchange in 2003 and in corporate finance in the late 1990s. At EFG Private Bank he co-led the team to privatise the Egyptian Paints and Chemicals business (PACHIN).
He led Alfagates’ immediate post-Gulf war contracting growth in road repairs, medical centre construction, logistic services, de-mining and canine security services.
Subsequently he developed oilfield support services, developing warehousing and logistics complexes, civil engineering and construction services, and soft services such as payroll management and representation and agencies, for significant international oil companies and service companies.
His first senior management role was as MD of a fast-expanding UK retail chain in the early 1990s. His early career was as a British Army officer.
Partner - insurance. William is a serial entrepreneur. He founded three successful businesses in the Middle East in the IT news, insurance and medevac / third party assistance sectors and retains a keen eye for commercial opportunities.
Having created and built the first, and only, foreign insurance brokers to have operated continuously inside post war Iraq, he founded Iraq Business News www.iraq-businessnews.com and Libya Business news www.libya-businessnews.com as commercial marketing outlets. They remain the foremost commercial news portals for these territories. He also founded Alfa Evac Limited, the first Iraq-specific medevac providers.
William is Chairman of The Future Energy Forum www.tfef.org, a member-only business network of oil and gas companies operating in frontier markets. He is also CEO of Panorama Underwriting Limited www.panoramauw.com, a Guernsey based insurance company which retains risks in the business and adventure travel sector to higher risk locations. William created the world’s first online travel insurance portal for higher risk locations.
After holding a commission in the Household Cavalry, William started his professional life as a retail insurance broker in the UK. He is FCA qualified and has been living and working in Iraq and the wider Middle East since 2004.
Catherine is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and holds Chartered Insurance Broker status. She began her insurance career in 1987 working for Provincial Insurance in Hull as a trainee motor underwriter. When the company relocated to Bolton she moved to local firm Oughtred and Harrison where she worked for ten years both in the insurance and IT sectors. Since graduating into the commercial insurance sector she has been employed as Account Handler to D E Ford Insurance Brokers in York; where she also managed the company’s IT systems, Gauntlet Risk Management in Leeds, The Insurance Partnership in York and more recently G A Hinks & Co in Hull.
When away from the office Catherine also supports community life by acting as Proper Officer and Responsible Financial Officer for two local parish councils.
